And the winner is from the Bronx!

November 30, 2009

Well, it’s after Thanksgiving so I guess we can put the 2009 baseball season to rest, including our fearless predictions. The final votes are in and Tony L. is the Winner, as expected. Congratulations, Tony, for leading from wire-to-wire! Now you can enjoy your individual title as well as NYY”s 27th title because the rest of the world is hoping that it takes at least another ten years for you to get the 28th. I have ordered a suitable trophy for Tony as the winner. I will forward a presentation picture as soon as it arrives.

In a surprising move up the standings, Marc W. jumped from 5th to second position, only one point behind Tony, by correctly picking the NL MVP and Cy Young. I guess that makes Marc the baseball equivalent of his beloved Houston Texans, close but just not quite good enough. (Peyton Manning would have made a pretty good closer, don’t you think, Marc?)

Rocky and Leo finished with an impressive 41 and 40 points, respectively. Rocky deserves credit for also correctly picking the NL MVP and Cy Young winners.

The rest of us need to be studying the hot-stove league to get ready for next year. The good news is that we’ve got lots of room for improvement.

Tony L. - 49 points (Pujols)

Marc W.  - 48 points (Pujols, Lincecum)

Rocky W.  - 41 points (Pujols, Lincecum)

Leo G.  - 40 points (Pujols)

Tom M.  – 30 points

Steve J.  - 30 points

Scott R. - 21 points (Pujols)

Pete H.  - 19 points

SI Mag. – 10 points (Lincecum)

Jed M.  – 8 points

Okay! That play-off game between the Twins and Tigers was not only very exciting, it also had a major impact on our competition standings at the end of the regular season. 5 of us had picked the Twins to win the division, so their epic comeback – and the Tigers historic collapse – boosted several of us up in the standings.

Tony L.  stayed on top, as he was at the All-Star break, but he was joined there by Rocky W. thanks to the Twins’ miracle comeback. Tony and Rocky both correctly picked 5 of the 8 play-off positions. Pretty Impressive. I’d be surprised if any professional sports reporters did any better (or even that well).

Steve, Leo and Tom M. correctly picked 4 teams, so they are not far behind. However, all 3 of them picked NYY to win the Series, as did Tony. So they may be stuck behind him if that were to come true. (Of course, all right thinking people will be pulling for that not to happen).

MLB All-Star Break, 2009

July 16, 2009

In case you haven’t been keeping up yourself, I thought you might be interested to see how everyone is doing at the All-Star break. By my calculations, using 3 points for an exactly correct prediction and 1 point for a correct play-off qualifier but in the wrong category, here are the standings:

Tony L. – 13 points (PHI, LAD, STL, LAA (3 pts.) NYY (1 pt.))

Pete H. - 13 points (LAD, BOS, LAA, NYY (3 pts.) PHI (1 pt.))

Jed M.  – 12 points (LAD, BOS, LAA, NYY)

Rocky W. -10 points (PHI, LAD, LAA (3 pts.) BOS (1 pt.))

Scott R.  – 10 points (LAD, BOS, LAA (3 pts) STL (1 pt.))

Tom M. - 7 points (LAD, LAA (3 pts) NYY (1 pt.))

Leo G. 7 points (LAD, LAA (3pts) NYY (1 pt.))

Steve J. 7 points (LAD, LAA (3 pts) NYY (1 pt.))

Marc  W. –  7 points (LAD, LAA (3 pts) PHI (1 pt.))

Interestingly, everyone would still have their WS champs alive, and most would still have both pennant winners alive. Also, those who picked Pujols, Lincecum and Texiera for individual awards are looking pretty good. But it is a long time until October….

FYI, my scoring system for the remaining rounds will be as follows:

pennant winner – 6 pts.

World Series winner – 12 pts.

individual awards – 10 pts each

Perfect score: 108 (fat chance)

Note that we didn’t pick the first round playoff winners because we won’t know the match-ups.

Presumably, someone will win

And be able to call themselves an expert
